Diapers, the nappies – these are words associated entirely with the babies; the toddlers. But, it is not necessarily that way all the time. Else we would never have heard of the terms such as the adult babies or the diaper lovers. It may sound strange that there is something as an ‘adult' baby. It sounds more like an oxymoron. How can a baby be adult? Or, if already adult, how can a person be a baby? And what has all these got to do with something as innocent as the baby diapers? It does not need one to specialize in psychoanalysis to know about the several peculiar kinds of fetishes. There are perhaps more kinds of fetishes than we can ever conceive of. The diaper lovers too are people who have a high possibility of possessing a fetish for diapers. As a matter of fact there are several people who have fetish for several items of clothing. Diapers are no exclusion from that list. Many people consider the terms adult baby and diaper lovers to be bearing the same meaning. Though the two are close to each other in terms of meaning, there are fine differences between them.

The diaper lovers are usually diaper fetishes. But those who are adult babies usually show signs of paraphilic infantilism. That means, while the diapers serve as a focus of sexual arousal for the diaper lovers, the case is not that simple with those who have a tendency towards paraphilic infantilism. By the term diaper lovers is meant not only those who have a diaper fetish. They may also have fetish for some plastic or rubber object. For instance there are often several people who have a sort of fetish for the waterproof pants or other cloth items of that are made of rubber. Such people seldom ear any kind of interest for the diapers and are more interested towards these kinds of clothing items.

The ideal partner of any diaper lover, that is, the kind of lover that the diaper lover fantasizes of, is invariably someone who is too erotic. In case the actual ‘real life' partner of the diaper lover has no inhibition and agrees to the whims of the fetish, diaper would be the symbol of eroticism. Diapers would be made a part of their relation. The diaper lover could be willing to wear the diaper or s/he might love to see her/his partner wearing the diapers. It may also be that both of them wear the diapers.

The presence of diapers in the sexual acts generally leads to several typical forms of role play such as that between a patient and nurse relation or a patient and doctor relation. But it is not that such roleplays will always be present. For the adult babies, however, there is no diaper fetish. It is only that they grow an alter-ego of a baby and the sight of themselves in diapers helps them to fantasize in a better way.
